Among these is the Greek Theatre, one of the symbols of the town as well as its most famous and evocative architectural landmark.
Probably of Hellenistic origin, it was built in the 3rd century BC and later modified in a style that is now entirely Roman.
From the highest steps, it is possible to admire Mount Etna, the Ionian Sea, and as far as the coast of Calabria.
Near Porta Catania, along Corso Umberto, stands the Taormina Cathedral. It is a medieval architectural work, with battlements that make it look more like a fortress.
Inside, visitors can admire works from the Byzantine, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.
In front of the main entrance stands the 17th-century Baroque-style fountain, the crowned centauress.
In the central Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, you can visit Palazzo Corvaja, located at the end of Corso Umberto, near Porta Messina.
The building was erected starting from the 11th century, with the construction of its cube-shaped tower.
It was later expanded over the centuries, taking on its current appearance. In 1411 it served as the seat of the Sicilian Parliament and was later inhabited by the Corvaja family.
After a period of abandonment and restoration by the Municipality of Taormina, it became the headquarters of the local tourism board.
Then head to Via Bagnoli Croci to visit the Villa Comunale, a terrace overlooking the Ionian coast and Mount Etna, with plants, shrubs, palm trees, and a rich variety of flowers.
Built by the Scottish noblewoman Lady Florence Trevelyan, it also features the characteristic Victorian follies, ornamental constructions.
